Although last year was the first model year on sale, that hasn’t stopped the Swedes from packing new gear into the 2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country. This year, a new engine joins the fold, as well as new standard safety features. But as this is still a fairly new vehicle, and with the crossover increasingly becoming the go-to for customer’s utility needs, you might find it warrants a closer look.

Back in the day, Volvo’s reputation in the U.S. came from its impressive safety features and wagon offerings, so one might say when a new one comes out, you can expect it to be good. Although the V90 Cross Country’s 8.3 inches of ground clearance make it more of a “crossover wagon” to the EPA, it was approached with the time-tested expertise of an automaker that knows what they’re doing, and the results are phenomenal.

Visually, the V90 Cross Country looks at once rugged and elegant, the former owed to its ride height, body cladding, and (functional) roof rails, and the latter to the brand’s latest styling. LED headlights and T-shaped “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime running lights and a studded, concave grille bringing premium prestige, as well as excellent visibility, while the interior’s Scandinavian inspirations embody class and style. Up to 54 cu-ft of cargo volume can be found with the rear seats folded, and back seat space is also quite generous.

But even though the V90 Cross Country drives more like an S90 than an XC90, that doesn’t mean it can’t handle the trails. Skidplates and selectable driving modes, not to mention well-sorted suspension make for a supple ride on road and—surprisingly—off, and can be further increased by an optional rear air suspension. Powering that is the new T5 AWD option with 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, or the familiar T6 AWD with 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The supple ride and exceptional versatility of the V90 Cross Country elevate it beyond a compromise between sedan-like ride and crossover utility.
