Until about eight years ago, those looking for a small utility vehicle had two options—a compact crossover like the beloved XC60, or a hatchback or wagon like the V60. Now, automakers are going a size smaller still with “subcompact” CUVs. But while Car and Driver notes that this segment has taken off in a big way, they also acknowledge that many such models can lack substance. When it came to the all-new 2018 Volvo XC40, however, they concluded that the Swede’s first-ever entry was more than exciting.

In fact, the word Car and Driver used to describe the XC40 isn’t one that’s normally attributed to one of our new Volvo cars: “hustle.” But when the publication got behind the wheel of a T5-powered R-Design model, that was just what they found.

In other Volvo models, the R-Design model is usually the most unique in terms of styling and flair. On the 2018 XC40, it’s the range topping model above the base “Momentum,” and comes loaded with a 248-horsepower turbocharged engine with AWD, five selectable drive modes, and a full compliment of safety equipment along with other luxury amenities and cues.

But for the reviewers, the XC40’s performance was the real star. Starting up with a gritty exhaust note, the smallest Swede put its best foot forward right out of the gate with exceptional chassis balance, and acceleration. With the drive mode in the “Dynamic” setting, the XC40’s T5 engine came alive with sharpened throttle response and steering—practically asking the driver to pin the gas pedal to the floor.

That liveliness alone makes the XC40 a stand-out in its market, even without the adaptive suspension option that is said to be coming later in the 2018 model year. Factor in the R-Design trim’s available Lava Orange carpeting, “baby robot” inspired exterior design, and the flexible capacity to carry five passengers or plenty of cargo in comfort, and it’s clear this new utility is poised to stand out in more ways than one!

The 2018 XC40 will arrive in showrooms this spring. To learn more about it, or other recent models from our preferred automaker, reach out to our Volvo dealership in Tulsa, OK at your convenience. We can be reached by phone or our contact form.
